Science education and outreach
Science is for everyone, and one of my greatest joys is exchanging knowledge and experiences with wide ranging audiences. Please see some examples below of previous outreach events I've been involved in.
Pollinator workshops with area schools
I’ve developed numerous activities to teach grade school students about the scientific process, and I’ve brought these activities into schools ranging from elementary to high schools. Please see some examples below:
Science Night, East Lansing, MI
Using interactive games and hands on demonstrations, I taught elementary aged students about native bees they can find right in their backyards.
Capstone project, Kingston, NH
I worked with high school students to develop a capstone project encouraging pollinator health in their local community. Students learned about pollinators, why they are important, and how land can be managed to encourage pollinator health.
Interactive research demonstrations
I have developed immersive research events where community members visited field sites, and gained insight into the scientific process. This gives attendees a closer look at the research process, and hands on experience with collecting data.
General audience talks
I have presented to wide ranging audiences interested in learning more about my research and/or conservation efforts they can employ. This includes a talk at Biology on Tap, a regional meeting of The Wild Ones, the Lansing Audubon Society, and several talks for the Boston Area Beekeeper Association.
Scientific talks
I have given numerous talks at scientific conferences, and been awarded for speaker excellence including best poster awards.
